MAYDI

ABOUT MAYDI

Two resins. Two identities.

MAYDI supplies Somali frankincense in two distinct resins: Maydi and Beeyo. Their local and botanical names help distinguish what you are buying.

Maydi — Boswellia frereana

Native to northern and north-eastern Somalia. The resin is locally called Maydi or Meydi, and the tree Yagcar or Yagar. Kew records traditional use as incense and chewing resin.

Beeyo — Boswellia carterii

The resin is also written Beyo, and the tree Mohor or Moxor. Boswellia carteri is treated by Kew as a synonym of Boswellia sacra, native to northern and north-eastern Somalia, southern Yemen and southwestern Oman. Beeyo is used as incense and in fragrance applications.
