Natural variation

One jar may contain cream, pale yellow, gold, beige, amber and light-brown pieces, in irregular shapes, textures and sizes. Each jar preserves the resin’s natural variation in colour, shape and texture.

Why Boswellia frereana is distinctive

Boswellia frereana is endemic to northern Somalia and grows among limestone escarpments. Chemical analysis of single-tree samples found a triterpenoid fraction rich in lupeol, α-amyrin, 3-epi-lupeol and β-amyrin, alongside a volatile profile led by α-thujene and α-pinene. It is a distinct Boswellia species with a chemical profile of its own.

Traditionally chewed as well as burned

Maydi has a distinctive physical property. Boswellia frereana contains very little water-soluble gum, so the resin stays substantially intact during chewing and holds its texture. This is one reason Maydi has traditionally occupied an important place in Arabian markets.
